Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) is investing heavily for the future. We are planning to open a new, modern container terminal in Copenhagen, by 2021 at the latest, securing growth for one of Scandinavia’s largest port operators in one of Europe’s most exciting markets.
What’s more, the new container terminal is just one of several new projects for CMP. Since 2010, the company has invested in new roll-on/roll-off, train and container terminals in Malmö, and a new cruise terminal in Copenhagen, which opened in 2013.
With the new location for the container terminal, CMP will be able to receive even larger ships in the future. It is essential for customers that they have as much flexibility as possible when designing their services and optimising their shipping fleets.
Establishing container operations in Ydre Nordhavn in Copenhagen is the best solution, in terms of both economic and nautical aspects. The terminal will be more automated, which will enable more containers to be handled per hour and better use to be made of the area.
CMP’s geographical location has enabled the development of a successful hub concept, which means that freight arrives at the terminals in Copenhagen and Malmö by ship
Full-service port
CMP is a port operator based in two countries, offering logistics services to 8,000 ships every year, and it is a full-service port. In both Copenhagen and Malmö, the company receives all kinds of goods, and offers berths and specially tailored infrastructure to all types of vessel, including roll-on/roll-off and container traffic, car imports, and wet and dry bulk shipping. We focus on creating new business and volumes to drive our growth. The major potential is not necessarily in chasing market share, but rather in establishing offerings that can attract new customers and lead to more business with existing customers.
CMP’s geographical location has enabled the development of a successful hub concept, which means that freight arrives at the terminals in Copenhagen and Malmö by ship. Once there, it is reloaded and proceeds onwards – by train, lorry or smaller ships – to its final destination throughout northern Europe, primarily Scandinavia and the Baltic Region and the roughly 100 million consumers in those areas. This setup gives our customers an advantage in their freight handling, and it also contributes to increased sustainability as freight is transported as far as possible by ship, which has a comparatively low environmental impact.
Additionally, CMP handles extensive cruise traffic. Copenhagen has long been one of northern Europe’s biggest and most popular cruise destinations, receiving 850,000 passengers in 2017.
Expanding operations
The EU has designated CMP’s facilities in Copenhagen and Malmö as ‘core ports’. The designation established the ports’ geographical location and modern infrastructure give them extra importance in terms of future investment to improve Europe’s transport network. This makes it easier to receive co-financing for investments and development projects, e.g. for merging rail and road connections or other infrastructure initiatives that will need to be implemented in our facilities in the future.
CMP’s new container terminal will open in 2021. Hand-in-hand with the investment in new port facilities, CMP is also focusing on developing new, intelligent business solutions. These are services that make us more effective, and which, above all, give customers added benefit. Intelligent solutions also mean we develop collaborations with other industry players who handle the customer products throughout the logistics chain. Together with these companies, it is possible to develop solutions that are more comprehensive for the customer.
