American Wind is the developer of the MicroCube, a micro wind turbine with a diameter of just nine inches and the capacity to produce 1kW of power. Founder Robert Yost used his background in aircraft technology and the construction of turbine engines for firms such as GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney and McDonnell Douglas to develop a unique blade for the MicroCube. Combining the aerofoil structure traditionally used for aircraft wings with contemporary jet turbine technology, Yost created a wind turbine that starts producing limited power in wind speeds of just one to two miles per hour – far lower than any other such turbine on the market – while maintaining its maximum power of 1kW at its rated wind speed.
